Columbia River Channel Improvement Project, Dredging Support As part of continual efforts to maintain navigateable waterways in the Columbia River, the Army Corps of Engineers Portland District contracted Bean Stuyvesant to conduct dredging operations in the areas between Portland, Oregon extending to the mouth of the Columbia River. Operations started in September, 2006 and ended as the dredge entered dry dock for repairs in mid-December 2007. Global Remote Sensing, LLC was sub-contracted to carry out all survey operations, inclusive of multibeam and single beam sonar surveys, for Bean Stuyvesant. GRS operations were conducted daily. Complete sets of data were acquired, processed, and post-processed within hours of the acquisition in order to maintain volume measurements for real-time dredging operation. At the mouth of the Columbia River, the pre-dredge and daily operations were conducted using a Kvichak Marine Industries 65-foot Defender Series Vessel, Real-time Kinematic GPS using the USACE base station near the mouth of the Columbia River, and a Ross single beam echo sounder. Dredge operations for the Channel Improvement Project (CRCIP) of the Columbia River required daily multibeam surveys with vertical tolerances of less than 0.2 ft. Global Remote Sensing used it's 26-foot Almar and the Kongsberg EM3002 system for this portion of the job. The EM3002 system was selected in order to maintain continuity with the USACE's Columbia River Survey Vessel which employs the same system. The day-to-day MBES surveys successfully revealed the dredged areas so that the Bean Stuyvesant Dredge could accurately maintain their dredge volumes. Examples of the pre and post-dredge imagery for a completed area are presented in Figures 1 and 2.
